Origin:
Not only did the Akita ancestry start in Japan, it is also designated as a national monument in that country. It was first bred by exiled aristocrats as a hunting dog, used later on as a fighter, and in its long and colorful history has even been served as a menu item. While little is said of its ancestors, it's likely from the Spit bloodline.

Natural Ability:
Nowadays, the stately Akita is mainly a family pet and protector, however, sometimes seen in a sled team. The Akita is well adjusted to serve as a guard dog without any special guard training.

Size:
Males weigh up to 110 pounds (50 kg) and stand 26 to 28 inches (66 to 71 cm) tall. Females weigh about 85 pounds (38 kg) and stand 24 to 26 inches (61 to 66 cm) tall.

Coat:
A heavy, soft, thick primer coat consists of hair that is straight and harsh. This dual coat is longer along the body and tail than on the appendages.

Colors:
Most any color is allowed from pure white to very dark. Dark streaks or flecks and spots are common, and well balanced, clear flecks or markings contribute greatly to the Akita beauty.

Coat Care:
Maintenance for the thick Akita coat is straightforward and uncomplicated. Bi-annual shedding normally involves extensive brushing and combing; in-between times, very little brushing is required.

Exercise:
Exercise is a must for these breeds that are from hardy hunting canine ancestry, and they need their share of physical and mental activeness.

Mental Attitude:The Akita is an intelligent, comparatively obedient pet, unexpressive and unemotional. The Akita is good-tempered, but oftentimes independent. It generally is quite dominant around other dogs, particularly those of their own sex. Cats and other small pets are at risk, and should be introduced early in life of an Akita. Children of the family are accepted, but neighborhood children are frequently excluded from the Akita circle of close friends.

Training:
Trainers need to be experienced and should approach Akita training slowly, with consistency and sureness. This intelligent animal will not tolerate mistreatment or bullying techniques, and once it rebels, you have a real problem on your hands. Home training needs to start early in life of an Akita pup, and kept going indefinitely.
