Origin:
The "barkless hound" is among the oldest breeds in the world. It originated in the Congo and was transported very early to Egypt. Basenji means wild and violent in Swahili. When excited, instead of barking, this primitive breed chortles and yodels.

Aptitude:
The Basenji is a hunting breed that is small but physically strong, with a possible hereditary susceptibility to distemper. It doesn't like inclement weather; it hates the rain and can't stand cold or drafty accommodations. This breed is inquisitive, clever, and stubborn. It trails by scent and sight.

Size:
Males weigh 24 pounds (11 kg) and stand 17 inches (43 cm) tall. Females weigh 22 pounds (10 kg) and stand 16 inches (40 cm) tall.
Coat:
This African breed's coat is short, dense, and fine.

Colors:
Chestnut red and white, pure black and white, tricolor, brindle and white are all acceptable colors.

Coat Care and Exercise:
Being short, the Basenji's coat is easily kept, brushing with a rubber currycomb or wiping with a chamois being the total requirement. This protective breed is ideal for apartment living, since it demands little exercise. If allowed the run of a large yard, it may become more active.

Mental Attitude:
The Basenji is a remarkable breed that is sometimes described as catlike due to its tendency to lick its coat and feet. This is an independent dog, one that bonds tightly with its master and needs human company. It is not a pet for children, and is rather reserved toward strangers. Basenjis tolerate other dogs fairly well, but must be introduced carefully to other family pets.

Training:
Lacking obedience training, this primitive dog is quite headstrong. It likes to please, but trainers must have great patience and cunning to teach this dog.
