Origin:
This trailing hound originates from Great Britain. Used for hunting rabbits or hares, this is the smallest of the trailing hounds.

Aptitude:
This little hound has a terrific nose, and when lost, it can usually be found following a trail of some kind. It is usually a fine family pet due to its size, coat type, and hardiness. It accommodates well to children and other pets, and when used for hunting rabbits or squirrels, it is ecstatic.
Size:
Shown in two separate varieties: the 13-inch (33 cm), which are less than 13 inches tall, and the 15-inch (38 cm), which are 13 to 15 inches tall. Beagles weigh between 18 and 30 pounds (8 to 14 kg).

Coat:
Beagles have close, medium length hair that is dense and hard textured.
Colors:
Any true hound color is permissible, including almost any combination of tan, black, and white, and clearly defined markings.

Coat Care and Exercise:
The close coat of a Beagle requires no more than brushing every few days with a rubber currycomb or stiff bristle brush.

Mental Attitude:
The Beagle has a sweet temperament that is well adapted to family life, but it makes a rather poor watchdog. It is a wonderful playmate for children, and since its heritage is pack-oriented, it behaves well around other pets when introduced as youths. When bored, it is swift to find diversion, which often leads it to wander. Equipped with a fine hound bay, it can be heard for miles when on a trail.

Training:
The Beagle isn't known to be extremely obedient and is sometimes slow to respond. It is a resolute and vigilant little hound that has a mind of its own. Training must be initiated early, be consistent, and be regularly practiced. Obedience classes are recommended for pet Beagles.
