Bloodhound
Belgium is usually considered the origin of this trail hound, although its roots may go back to ancient Greece and Rome. Its ancestors were probably the Saint Hubert's hound of eighth-century Belgium.
Aptitude:
The Bloodhound may have been named for its ability to follow a wounded creature interminably, or it may have simply been short for pure-blooded. In either case, this animal has the best nose in the tracking business. It is happiest when trailing, but is usually fairly content to be a pet. It is perhaps the most determined tracker in existence, and is unequaled in stamina as well.
Size:
Males weigh 90 pounds (41 kg) and stand 26 inches (66 cm) tall. Females weigh 80 pounds (36 kg) and stand 23 inches (66 cm) tall. This doesn't mean these dogs can't weigh more and stand taller, providing they remain in proportion.
Coat:
The Bloodhound coat is short, smooth, and tight.
Colors:
Black and tan, red and tan, and tawny are the usual colors of the Bloodhound, but they may also have badger-colored hair flecked with white. A small amount of white is allowed on the chest and feet.
Coat Care and Exercise:
Grooming a Bloodhound is easily accomplished. A short bristled brush or rubber slicker brush or currycomb are used to keep this dog glossy. Although puppies' exercise shouldn't be forced, as adults these dogs will outwalk most humans. They have phenomenal stamina when following a trail.
Mental Attitude:
The Bloodhound is people-oriented, gentle, and affectionate. It is an excellent children's dog, providing the children learn not to torment the dog. This dog will tolerate nearly any abuse without retribution. It is quite tolerant of other family pets, strangers, and visitors alike.
Training:
Patience, tact, consistency, and more patience are required to train a Bloodhound. It learns very early how to avoid training with its soulful eyes and countenance. It seems to believe obedience to commands is not required if it looks sad. If you own a Bloodhound and want to see it excel, look into formal tracking trials or search and rescue work.
