Origin:
The Boxer, as we know it, originated in Munich, Germany, about 1850. It was bred from Bulldogs and Mastiffs, and was used primarily as a pit fighter.

Aptitude:
The Boxer is a working dog, and is best appreciated when given something to do. It has been used as a guide dog, and its intelligence lends it nicely to obedience trials and agility work. Used in Germany as police work, the Boxer obviously has a big heart and is quite trainable.

Size:
Males weigh about 70 pounds (32 kg) and stand 22.5 to 25 inches (57 to 63 cm) tall. Females weigh about 60 pounds (27 kg) and stand 21 to 23.5 inches (54 to 60 cm) tall.

Coat:
The Boxer's coat is short, lustrous, and lies close and tight to the body.

Colors:
The breed standard calls for fawn and brindle colors. Fawn describes everything from light tan to mahogany; brindle includes defined black stripes. White markings that do not exceed one third of the entire coat are permissible. White boxers are disqualified from showing.

Coat Care and Exercise:
Grooming a Boxer is a simple job. Using a chamois or a rubber grooming mitten, the dog is rubbed down occasionally, and looks shiny and glossy.

Mental Attitude:
The Boxer, despite its heritage, is friendly to a fault. It is a spontaneous, happy, uncomplicated dog that makes a superb family pet. A sweet disposition and a lively nature make it a wonderful children's companion and playmate. Although quite protective of its family members, the Boxer is easily trained to adjust to other pets as well. Sometimes almost boisterous, the Boxers will join you for a romp or a walk at any time of the day or night.

Training:
Being a bubbly, happy dog, most training is geared to quiet the dog. The Boxer is desirous of pleasing its master, and training chores are happy times of interaction with your dog. It delights in obedience work, and is often engaged in agility trials.
