Origin:
Named for the French province of Brittany, this old breed was originally named Brittany Spaniel. It is said to be the progeny of several European breeds including the Red and White Setter and the French Braque de Bourbonnais Pointer. It came to America in about 1931 after becoming a favorite in its native land.

Aptitude:
The Brittany is truly a dual-purpose dog. Its popularity with hunters and field trial enthusiasts is about as strong as with dog show devotees. As a gundog it has an exceptional nose and will retrieve waterfowl with nearly the same talent as it does upland birds. This breed is often found in back-yards, and is quite popular as a family dog.

Size:
Males weigh 30 to 40 pounds (13.5) to 18 kg) and stand 17.5 to 20.5 inches (44 to 51 cm) tall. Females are only slightly smaller with no specific size difference given in the standard.

Coat:
The Brittany's coat is flat, dense, and wavy with a medium texture and not much feathering. Neither silky nor curly, the coat is easily cared for.

Colors:
Orange and white or liver and white colors predominate, but roan patterns and ticking are desirable. Black is a disqualification.

Coat Care and Exercise:
The Brittany is among the easiest breeds to groom. Regular combing and brushing should take no more than a few minutes several times weekly. Exercise is another matter. The active Brittany, like other active bird dogs, requires regular, extensive exercise. Bored, inactive dogs often develop nuisance habits.

Mental Attitude:
The sweet-tempered Brittany is an ideal dog to own. It is a playful, gentle, and loyal companion, a determined and dedicated hunter. This dog fits well into active families who hunt on weekends. It is a curious, obedient dog that thrives on attention and training.

Training:
Intelligence is a strong suit of the Brittany. This highly trainable dog loves interaction with its owner, and in some circles is known as a one-man dog. Obedience training and tracking provide other interests for this breed.
