Origin:
This short legged, long, small dog hails from Germany where it was bred to burrow into badger dens and haul out prey.

Aptitude:
Originally a hunting dog, the Dachshund has evolved as a tough, strong, little companion dog. It is equipped with more courage than most small dogs, and makes an excellent family dog. Tough and hardy, the Doxie is a resilient pet.

Size:
This breed is shown in two sizes, standard and miniature, and in three coat types, smooth, longhaired, and wirehired. The standards weigh more than 11 pounds (5 kg), usually between 16 and 32 pounds (7.3 to 14.6 kg) and stand about 8 to 9 inches (20 to 25 cm) tall. Miniatures weigh less than 11 pounds (5 kg) and stand 5 to 6 inches (12.5 to 15 cm) tall.

Coat:
Coats vary from short and smooth to long and wavy to rough and wiry. Each has its particular quality described in the breed standard.

Colors:
Dachshunds are seen in all shades of red and brown with the possibility of dapples, double dapples, and shadings of sable or cream and black.

Coat Care and Exercise:
Although varying according to coat type, the dachshund is easily groomed. The longhaired variety requires daily brushing, but little or no trimming. Occasional brushing and combing is sufficient maintenance for the wirehaired and smooth varieties.

Mental Attitude:
The Dachshund is a brave, rather dominant dog. It is known to be resourceful and curious, and is a tenacious guard dog. Quite protective of its children, it is loyal to its family and often shuns the acquaintance of strangers. The hunting instinct remains in this breed, and digging and burrowing is a favorite pastime.

Training:
Patience is required to own a Dachshund. Due to its strong will, it requires constant training tune-ups. It is said to be obedient, if not slavish, in its response to commands.
