Origin:
One of the largest spaniels, the English Springer is closely related to the English Cocker, both originating in England in spite of its Spanish-derived name. The Springer is a land spaniel and originally was used to spring or flush game for Greyhounds or Falcons.

Aptitude:
Like other spaniels, the English Springer's greatest joy is in the field. It is truly a dual-purpose dog, finding use both as a hunting dog and a family pet. It is a gentle, friendly companion and an energetic, biddable hunter. Playful, loyal, and intelligent, the Springer is also an excellent natural guard dog.

Size:
Males weigh 49 to 55 pounds (22 to 25kg) and stand 20 inches (51 cm) tall. Females weigh about 49 pounds (22 kg) and stand 19 inches (48 cm) tall.

Coat:
Springer coats are dense, smooth, and well feathered, with short, fine hair being found on the head and front of forelegs. The coat is flat or wavy, and waterproof.

Colors:
Black or liver and white...black or liver and white with tan accent markings...blue...blue roan are all permissible. All degrees of ticking are seen with these colors. Lemon, red, or orange is penalized.

Coat Care and Exercise:
The fine coat of a Springer requires regular brushing, and most also need professional trimming several times a year. This dog's long ears and foot hair require regular care as well.

Mental Attitude:
The personality of a Springer is generally well suited to active families and individuals who can spend lots of time playing and exercising their dogs. It is a friendly, sociable dog that displays unusual cunning and intelligence. Obedient and eager to please, these dogs are excellent pets.

Training:
Early training is important in this strong breed. Handling, bonding, and obedience training will enhance the value of the Springer as a companion pet. When approached in a logical, stepwise fashion, training should be trouble-free.
