How to Care for Freshwater Fish

Caring for fresh water fishes is not complex. Instead it is simply a matter of learning about the type of fish you are interested in and how to properly do so. You can learn how to care for a specific type of fish by searching online or by either purchasing or checking out a book on your specific type of fish.

You have to understand what they require for their environment (heat, light, etc.) and what nutritional needs they have. This will allow you to understand what supplies you need for your fish. Choose an aquarium that is 20 to 30 gallons or more if you want a large amount of fish. Acrylic or glass makes up an aquarium. Glass does not scratch as easily and it is less expensive. Acrylic tanks are better insulated and allow for more natural light transfer.

Basic supplies for your fish will include the tank, a light, filter, cleaning supplies, aquarium hood, air pump, heater, aerator, rocks, thermometer and gravel. You will also need to add plants (plastic or living) and food to your list.

The fresh water aquarium fish should be kept in a tank that is equipped with the tools that will keep the oxygen in the tank at appropriate levels for the health of the fish. Fresh water aquarium fish are more flexible in their filtration requirements. They also can eat most commercially available fish food.

Food types vary from pelts and flakes to gelatin. Be sure to know which is best for the health of your fish. Make sure your tank will be supported properly and that your fish are in a proper location in your home or office. Your fish’s health should always be your top priority. As long as you follow these steps you will be caring properly for your aquarium fish in no time.
