Origin:
This interesting dog hails from Zimbabwe, South Africa, where it was bred by the Boer farmers as a lion-hunting dog. The characteristic ridge that runs down the dog's back relates to its crossing with a half-wild dog of the Hottentots. The Ridgeback has been used to flush partridge, water buffaloes, and prowlers.

Aptitude:
Outstanding as a guard dog and family protector, the Ridgeback is an excellent hunting dog with both sight and scent trailing attributes, great strength, and stamina. It is never quarrelsome with other dogs, and obedient to its master.

Size:
Males weigh 75 pounds (30 kg) and stand 25 to 27 inches (63 to 68 cm) tall. Females weigh 65 pounds (30 kg) and stand 23 to 25 inches (60 to 66 cm) tall.

Coat:
The Rhodesian Ridgeback's coat is dense, sleek, and glossy. It has a strip of hair that grows contrary to the rest of the coat, and extends down the spine.

Colors:
The characteristic color is a rich, reddish wheaten; the dog has a black mask.

Coat Care and Exercise:
It is easy to maintain the coat; rubber currycomb brushing to remove the dead hair is required. This is a hunting dog, and should be exercised accordingly. It becomes moody and melancholy if it does not get ample exercise.

Mental Attitude:
Fantastic stamina is this dog's hallmark. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is intelligent, loyal to its family, vigilant, and somewhat suspicious of strangers. It is said to have the heart of a lion, and is an excellent companion. It is a gentle dog but may be too big and rambunctious for small children. Like other hounds, it accepts other pets if introduced to them while a puppy.

Training:
This breed is known to learn quickly, but due to its great strength and heritage, it may be a bit stubborn. A confident, experienced trainer is needed to work with this breed.
