Siberian Husky Dog
Northeastern Asia produced this tireless sled dog. It was developed by the Chulchi people of Siberia as their only means of transportation.
Aptitude:
The Siberian Husky's principal use is pulling a sled, generally as a member of a team of similar dogs. It has proven itself capable of fantastic feats of speed and endurance in that endeavor. Skijoring is another similar task in which the athletic, powerful, streamlined Husky excels.
Size:
Males weigh 45 to 60 pounds (20 to 27 kg) and stand 21 to 23.5 inches (54 to 60 cm) tall. Females weigh 35 to 50 pounds (27 kg) and stand 17.5 to 23 inches (55 to 58 cm) tall.
Coat:
A true double coat keeps the Siberian Husky warm in artic weather. It is of medium length, and the undercoat is soft and dense, while the guard hairs are straight, and lie smooth.
Colors:
All colors from solid black to pure white are permissible. Many striking markings abound to adorn the beautiful lines of the Siberian.
Coat Care and Exercise:
The coat of this breed requires little regular care in spite of its density. Its beauty is greatest when the dog is kept outdoors, when the weather is cold. Grooming is advised during the semiannual shedding.
Like other working dogs, the Siberian Husky thrives on exercise, and to make one settle for less is a crime. Melancholy, boredom, bad habits, and howling are usual signs that the Husky isn't exercised strenuously and regularly enough.
Mental Attitude:
The Siberian Husky is a friendly, cheerful dog, playful and affectionate. It has been bred to serve as a sled dog, and in human environments it is often a mischievous, independent thinker that is prone to wander off. It accepts other dogs if introduced properly, but is often a threat to cats and small pets.
Not usually considered to be a strict family or apartment pet, the Siberian Husky likes children, but would rather go for a run over the mountainside than play in a backyard.
Training:
Many Husky's are obstinate and difficult to train. Consistency and patience is required of a Husky trainer. Although clever, this dog would rather make up its own behavior rules than accept those of human owners.
