Origin:
Originally called the Weimar Pointer, this breed began in Germany as a gundog. It is said to be kin to both the Greman Shorthaired Pointer and the Bloodhound.

Aptitude:
The Gray Ghost is a strong-willed but obedient hunting dog that points and retrieves well in the field and is most appreciated by those who hunt several times weekly. It is a rough and rowdy dog with great stamina that is best suited to hunting and outdoor families.

Size:
Males weigh 57 to 77 pounds (30 to 37 kg) and stand 25 to 27 inches (62 to 67 cm) tall. Females weigh 55 to 70 pounds (22 to 31 kg) and stand 23 to 25 inches (57 to 62 cm) tall.

Coat:
In its country of origin, it is still known in two coat types, longhaired and shorthaired, but the American Registry recognizes only the shorthaired variety. Its hair is quite sleek and lays tight.

Colors:
Mouse gray to silver gray are the only colors recognized. There may be a slight blending of color to lighter shades on the head.

Coat Care and Exercise:
The Weimaraner's slick coat requires very little care; occasional brushing with a chamois or rubber currycomb will keep the coat in shape. Exercise is another matter as the Weimaraner is not a city dog, and has a need for extensive work and exercise.

Mental Attitude:
Often too much for small children to handle, this dog is better suited to adult families. It is protective yet friendly to those whom it knows.

Training:
Like most hunting dogs, the Weimaraner delights in field training and prefers to be hunting or training. It is a dominant breed that requires a strong trainer and regular work.
