Pet Sitting Birds

 





 When pet sitting for a client  that has a bird(s) stay focused and use caution when caring for these pets. Birds are fragile creatures and can be injured if they happen to escape out of their cage.

Some don't's:
I : Don't feed the bird certain foods (i.e chocolate, avocado) because they are toxic.
II : Don't leave any doors and windows open in case the bird gets out of his cage.
III : Don't hold a bird tight because their bones are fragile and can easily be fractured.
IV : Don't let a pet bird loose in the kitchen around boiling water or stove burners.
V : Don't turn on ceiling fans if the bird is out of its cage.
VI : Don't smoke around the bird.
VII : Don't over heat non-stick-coated (Teflon) pots or pans for the fumes are toxic to birds.
VIII : Don't let the bird eat toxic plants (daffodils, juniper, azaleas, oleanders,etc).
IX : Don't feed the bird pits from fruit as in cheeries, plums or peaches because these contain cyanide which is toxic to birds.

Some do's:

I : Do close the blinds or pull the drapes over the windows if you let the bird out of it's cage to keep it from injuring himself flying into the glass.
II : Do make sure a fireplace screen is covering the fireplace.
III : Do cover aquariums.
IV : Do keep toilet lids down to keep the bird from falling in.
V : Do keep other pets (cats, dogs) away from the pet bird.
VI : Do keep clean water in it's cage.
VII : Do clean food bowl.
VIII : Do keep the cage clean.

Different client's may have different types of birds to care for. Some may have the smaller birds such as the Parakeet, Canary, Finch, Lovebird, etc. Other's may have the larger bird's such as the Cockatiel, African Grey, Cockatoo, Amazon, Quaker, etc.

We will look at the more popular bird's people have as pets so you can familiarize yourself with each species. The more you are familiar with the type of pet a client has the more at ease and comfortable he or she will be in leaving it in your care.
